    Advanced

The Advanced selection box allows you to select a number of options:

And, Or, Except, Truncate, Nearby and Wildcard.

These are known as Boolean Logic terms and allow you to refine a Search.

    Boolean Term Symbol Description
And ^ Images will be found only if each word/s or phrase is found within an image description, eg. Shellharbour and Harbour and Boats.
Truncate * If you are not sure how to spell a word; or if the word is plural or you want to know what words are available, you can key in part of the word or characters, known as the word stem or root and the *, eg. horse*. This example may find all images of horse and horses and horsefly and horseriding and etc.
Or , Images will be found if either word/s or phrase is found within an image description, eg. Kangaroos or Wallabies.
Nearby // Images will be found only when two words are indexed close together in the image description: 10 words maximum, eg. Dog//Cat will only find images if these words are within 10 words of each other. Dog/5/Cat will only find images if these words are within five words of each other.
Except - Images will be found only if the image description does not contain a word/s or phrase following Except, eg. Beaches except People
Wildcard ? Searches can be performed if you only know part of the keyword. This is useful if you are not sure how to spell the keyword or if the keyword is plural. The wildcard ? can be positioned at the beginning, at the end or anywhere in the keyword. A keyword can have more than one wildcard in different positions. EXAMPLES: sea? would return images whose descriptions contained words that started with 'sea' followed by anything else eg. sea, search and seascape. ?side would return images whose descriptions contained words that ended with 'side' eg. inside, outside and aside. ?son? would return images whose descriptions contained words that had 'son' in the middle of the word. eg. reasons, reasonable, seasons and seasoning.

    Within a Field

Normally the search is across all the fields of the description of the image. You can narrow your search so the search is confined to one field only.
